Uwinka Campsite is found at the Uwinka Reception Center hence making it the only place to enjoy Jungle Camping in the Uwinka area. Here guests are in the heart of the rainforest, with only the sounds of chirping birds and rumbling monkeys. Accommodation here is offered in Tents, within a covered terrace (a wooden platform) thus providing protection from the rain, and given its location, guests are treated to amazing views of the verdant rainforest.
Uwinka Campsite Facilities and Services
Uwinka Campsite boasts of clean shared bathrooms with bucket showers, and guests can choose to have cold or hot water. There is an incredible firepit that overlooks the verdant Valley, and firewood is provided to provide warmth during cold evenings, especially during the rainy season.
There is only a small cafeteria at Uwinka Campsite hence guests are guaranteed of enjoying a real wilderness Camping experience hence can bring their own food and drinking water.
Guests are allowed to bring their own Tents, but can also be hired at a small fee and this comes with a sleeping mat, a sleeping bag, and Camp chairs for relaxing and taking in the magnificent views of the forest.
Attractions/Activities to Enjoy while at the Campsite
Uwinka Reception area, where this Campsite is found is a starting point for most activities in Nyungwe Forest National Park hence making it a perfect base for backpackers without safari vehicles. The canopy walk, chimpanzee trekking, and hiking (most trails) begin from here.
Chimpanzee trekking
One of the two habituated chimpanzee communities can be tracked from the Uwinka Reception area. This provides the opportunity to observe and learn about the unique behavior of Great Apes that are closely related to humans. However, your stay at Uwinka Campsite doesn’t include the Rwanda chimpanzee trekking tour permit fees in Nyungwe or the Park entry fees.
Hiking/Guided forest walks
There are over 15 hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park but most of them (including the Igishigishigi, Buhoro, Irebero, Imbaraga, Umugote, and Umuyove start from Uwinka reception centers while Ngabwe, Bigugu, Congo Nile Divide, Muzimu, and others start between Uwinka and another reception center. Most of these trails introduce visitors to outstanding plant/tree species, beautiful waterfalls, birds, and many other unmissable attractions.
Birding tours
You can start your birding tour from the Uwinka area for an opportunity to see some of the 320 bird species that include several Albertine Rift endemics. Look out for the Regal sunbirds, Rockefeller’s sunbirds, Albertine Owlets, Purple-breasted sunbirds, Dusky Crimsonwing, Kungwe Apalis, Red-throated Alethe, and handsome spurfowl among others.
