One and Only Nyungwe House Trail
The One & Only Nyungwe House Trail is one of the hikes enjoyed by Nyungwe Forest National Park visitors, especially those staying at the luxurious One & Only Resort (though it is open for every traveler) and starts from the Gisakura Reception Center. This Trail takes only one and a half hours to complete and rewards hikers with sights of the beautiful exotic feathered beauties (bird species) as well as breathtaking viewpoints. Generally, hikers get to learn about the indigenous flora, exceptional primates (including those encountered), colorful butterflies, and birds that include the great blue Turaco, the unique Grauer’s rush warblers, the red-collared mountain babblers and the Yellow African citral among others.
The 1000-square-kilometer Nyungwe Forest National Park is in the Southern Province of Rwanda and is a survivor of the last Ice Age. It is also home to the Continent’s largest Afro-montane rainforest and haven to the oldest rainforest systems thus making it Rwanda’s most remarkable area of exceptional biodiversity. Given the high demand on this Trail, booking in advance is recommended and will be guided.
Hiking through the One & Only Nyungwe House Trail costs $40 per person for Foreign non-residents, only $30 per person for foreign Residents, and RWF 3000 per person for Rwandan Citizens. These rates don’t include Park entry fees that cost $100 per person for Foreign non-residents, $60 per person for Foreign residents and African Citizens, or $10 for EAC Citizens (including Rwandan Citizens). This walk is guided and therefore, you will need to pay $15 per guide.
What to Carry/Wear during the One & Only Nyungwe House Trail walk.
For a stress-free and successful hike through the One & Only Nyungwe House Trail, you will need to carry enough drinking water, energy-giving snacks, a good camera with enough memory space and extra batteries, pair of binoculars for sighting smaller and far bird species, a backpack, sunglasses, a rain jacket, and make sure that you are braced in sturdy hiking boots, a long-sleeved shirt, breathtaking safari pant, insect repellant, and sunscreen.
When to explore the One & Only Nyungwe House Trail.
The One & Only Nyungwe House Trail is open throughout the year but advance booking is always recommended. The rainy season- March to May and October to November is when flowers bloom and birds breed hence providing the best views. The sky also becomes clearer after rains hence the most breathtaking photography opportunities. However, be prepared for a more challenging hike as the trail become muddier and more slippery.
