Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park is approximately 200 kilometers drive from Kigali City and takes about 5-6 hours to drive on tarmac roads winding through the vast lush tea estates as well as a roadside Parade of various primate species to get to the south-western side of Rwanda where this magnificent Park is found. However, you can also access the Park through air transport. Flights from Kigali to Kamembe last about 30-45 minutes. Nyungwe Forest is amazing and breathtaking scenery and is a vantage point for picturesque views of the Virunga and the Congo. The Park is situated within the south-western corner of Rwanda and with a size of 1000 square kilometers, it is so far the second largest after the savannah Akagera National Park. Established in 2004, this forest National Park currently protects the largest standing portion of montane rainforest within East and Central Africa. Nyungwe forest is the Primate Capital of Rwanda with over 13 species of primates (25% of Africa’s total primate species) including the chimpanzee, silver monkeys, Dent’s Mona monkeys, olive baboons, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoests monkeys that are part of the 85 mammal species. There are also 300 species of birds occupying the different ecosystems (rainforest, bogs, Bamboo, wetlands, and grasslands) of this Park. Nyungwe biodiversity has made it a priority for conservation in Africa.
This park is more famous because of its wonderful activities that you find there like Chimpanzee trekking, canopy walk, bird watching, hiking, and nature walks among other activities that help it to becomes amazing. The scenery through hiking to a forest waterfall or to the vast open swamp area offers different glimpses into the stunning range of habitats. Nyungwe is indeed spectacular.
