Buhoro Trail is one of the 13 hiking trails within Nyungwe Forest National Park and offers opportunities of encountering extraordinary bird species, tree species, and many others. The Buhoro trail extends for two and a half (2.5) kilometers for a round trip and are so far one of the shortest hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park. The Buhoro Trail rewards tourists with chances of encountering some of the outstanding residents of the Park especially the Turaco (including the Black-billed Turaco, Great blue Turaco, and many others).

Hiking through the Buhoro trail in Nyungwe also offers views of outstanding tree species that include the Ocotea, usambarensis and the East African Yellowwood trees among others. Other phenomenal species are the strangler figs and giant lobelia among others. In addition to Buhoro Trail, other hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park include the Imbaraga Trail, Irebero Trail, Umoyove Trail, Karamba Trail, Igishigishigi Trail, Isumo Trail, Umugote, Bigugu Trail and Kamiranzovou Trail among others.

Best time to hiking the Trail

Hiking through the Buhoro Trail is an all-year-round activity but the dry season (June, July, August, September, December, January, and February) is the best because during this time the hiking trails are less muddy and slippery. However, hiking during the wet season (October, November, March, April, and May) offers sights of numerous bird species

What to carry for an excelling hiking.

Hiking through Buhoro Trail requires tourists to have a rain jacket, a hat, a backpack, drinking water, snacks/packed lunch, waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, walking stick, camera, binoculars, sunglasses, insect repellent, and gardening gloves.

How to get to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in the south-western side of Rwanda, about 225 kilometres and 4-5 hours’ drive from Kigali (Rwanda’s Capital City). Nyungwe Forest National Park can be reached by either air or road transport.

With air transport, flights can be chartered from Kigali to Kamembe Airport that is only 32 kilometres drive from One &Only Nyungwe House. For tourists opting for road transport, private and public means start from Kigali to Uwinka through a number of Towns including Muhanga, Nyanza, Huye, and Nyamagabe.
