Butterflies in Nyungwe Forest National Park is among the top tourist attraction within the Park, there are two species of butterflies that are endemic to Nyungwe (Bebearia dowsetti and Acraea turlini) while Papilio leucotaenia (VU), restricted to a small area of the Albertine Rift, occurs commonly in Nyungwe.
Nyungwe Forest National Park counts to over 120 butterflies and these are the most charismatic invertebrate species in all of Nyungwe, 21 Albertine Rift endemic species and of which 40 are endemic to Nyungwe. On a sunny day, the forest is full of brilliant patches of color.

Butterflies in Nyungwe Forest National Park appears in red, green, and yellow color as they come in dark color given that they need to absorb heat from the surrounding area, they do not have any chewing mouthparts, but blessed with a tubular straw-like appendage called proboscis that helps then sip nectar. They can smell with their antennae and taste using their feet and they are a few species in the world that can orient themselves both in latitude and longitude. Males attract females by releasing pheromone chemicals from their abdomen.
