The Umuyove Trail
Umuyove is another Trail that begins at the Uwinka Visitor Center, extending for only 5.5 kilometers, and takes only three and a half hours to complete. It is also referred to as the “Mahogany Trail” and provides an opportunity to refresh by the waterfall and walk under Mahogany trees. Some lucky visitors who use this trail were treated to surprising sights of chimps.
Ndamabare Trail
Ndambarare Waterfall Trail is one of the many hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park that will lead you to the recently discovered Ndambarare waterfalls. This Trail is 9.6 kilometers long for a round trip and takes about three and a half hours to complete. Starting from the Gisakura reception Center, this trail goes through different viewpoints that include the tea estate/plantation and factory that offer unmissable views as well as sights of different bird species. This Trail is hiked in two sessions- the morning session (starting at 9 am) and the afternoon session (beginning at 1 pm).
Irebero Trail
Irebero is a medium-to-hike trail that extends about 3.4 kilometers and takes only 3 hours to complete. It goes around two of Nyungwe’s highest peaks while rewarding visitors with unmatched views of Lake Kivu on the Rwandan side.
Kamiranzovu Trail
The name “Kamiranzovu” means “swallowing elephants” and is what the wetland was named after it was believed that the last elephant was swallowed by the swamp (the largest in Nyungwe Forest). This Trail is over 5.9 kilometers and I considered a moderate-to-hike with an estimated time of only 3 hours. The Trail is also loved by birders because sunbirds and other species are commonly sighted.
Umugote Trail
If you choose the Umugote Trail, then you should be prepared for a real challenge because this 3.6-kilometer Trail that takes only 3 hours involves a bit of ascending hills which reward you with clear views of the Ridges, beautiful flowers and Kibira National Park in neighboring Burundi. For travelers interested in birding and spotting primates, this is the perfect trail.
