Track Gisovu Chimpanzee Community in Nyungwe Forest National Park, this is so far the newest/latest to be habituated and open for tracking. This Gisovu Chimpanzee community is found in the main Nyungwe Forest, although it is more remotely found in the Gisovu area. This is in the northern end of Nyungwe Forest National Park, close to Kibuye Town hence making it perfect for combining chimpanzee tracking with relaxation on the shores of Lake Kivu. Book Now
Because the fact that Gisovu Chimpanzee community is still new (was recently habituated), the members are not yet very familiar with visitors hence are likely to flee or even move faster when approached by visitors. Tracking this community normally starts from Gisovu offices (close to Kibuye) and visitors are expected to converge at the briefing point at 4:30 am for briefing, then 30 minutes later be transferred to the Park for the actual tracking adventure. This adventure is done once a day (only the morning session) and lasts 2-4 hours depending on the location of the Great Apes.
How difficult is it to track Gisovu Chimpanzee Community in Nyungwe.
The level of difficulty and duration of tracking the Gisovu Chimpanzee Community in Nyungwe varies from time to time, and this is because these Great Apes make their nests every day and are always on the move. Tracking might be short and easy today, and then become long and very difficult the next day depending on how far the animals move in their natural habitat. Chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda lasts 2-4 hours (on average), but this would have been longer if visitors were searching for the Great Apes without trackers (with only guides/Rangers). Trackers normally move ahead of visitors to find Chimpanzees before they leave their nests and keep in communication with guides who find the easier routes to reaching them. This surprises visitors but it is possible to stay at any of the accommodation facilities if you are scheduled to track the Gisovu chimpanzee community. One important thing to note is that you will not know which community you will be tracking when booking your primate safari or even when booking your accommodation. However, you can have this information at least days before the day of the actual trekking hence helping in planning (what time to leave the Lodge), especially when you are staying in far-flung accommodation facilities.
